About

Zero-waste design is the trading name for Roy Mohan Shearer MEng, a freelance designer/engineer/maker based in Glasgow, UK.

The Name / The Philosophy

The name 'zero-waste design' emerged from a general approach to the design process that I developed during my degree, that of aiming for complete effectivity in areas such as time, labour, materials, energy, finances and functionality. In this way the approach is intrinsically linked with the engineering concept of efficiency, modernist and functionalist design theory and closed loop eco-design models, particularly McDonough & Braungart's "Cradle to Cradle" paradigm and the emerging material waste reduction principal of the same name.

Zero-waste design is interested in solving design problems by making the absolute most of available resources in a creative, experimental and pragmatic way.

Biography: Roy Mohan Shearer

Roy graduated as Master of Engineering (Euro) in Product Design Engineering in July having studied at the Glasgow School of Art, University of Glasgow and the Institutt for Produktdesign, NTNU, Norway. Over the four years of his study, Roy undertook a range of commercial and academic projects encompassing industrial, packaging, graphic and multimedia design and engineering. He set up Zero-waste Design in August 2005 asa one-man endeavour, collaborating with other groups and freelancers as necessary.

Roy is especially interested in sustainable innovation, intermediate technologies and interaction design. When he is not designing something he is likely to be found playing drums.
